Most people over 20 have a particular fondness for the concept of a book. It has a physical presence; it can be read in any order and at any time. Its pages can be highlighted and annotated. All of these assets have a corresponding liability. The reader can only see the words the author has presented, and those words are frozen in time.

While the static nature may not be a detriment in a novel, it presents many obstacles in a textbook. Laws, regulations, and regulatory pronouncements modify existing situations on a daily basis. New concepts are introduced in the marketplace, and modifications are made to existing products. Terminology evolves over time, and there is no opportunity to question the author or to conduct discussions with peers in the industry.

The author shares all of these frustrations. After a book is in print, the author's discussions with readers makes him aware that portions of the texts may be unclear, ambiguous, or just plain wrong. The author's knowledge of the subject matter continues to grow and evolve. He would like to highlight and annotate the text and have all readers see those changes. The natural limitations of the page size and book size limit the ability to present large spreadsheets or to include lengthy supporting documentation.

Many years ago, a book represented the only way to transmit knowledge without face-to-face presence. Radio and television offered the opportunity for remote presence, but with high cost. The availability of VCR tapes, CDs, and DVDs dramatically lowered the cost, but the content was still frozen in time. Now with the Internet all of the liabilities of a book can be overcome without sacrificing the assets
